Teeth whitening is a simple and effective way to improve your smile. There are two types of whitening on the market. One is chair-side whitening topped with home whitening, the other is home whitening alone.
Whitening should only be carried out when the teeth and gums are healthy and disease free. One of the side effects of whitening is sensitivity, which can occur if you have already got sensitive teeth or if you have gum disease and recession. This sensitivity is mostly temporary and can be treated with high fluoride sensitive tooth paste and stopping whitening treatment, although a small percentage can be permanent.
Chair-side whitening is fast, but the percentage of the active ingredient carbamide peroxide is usually higher than the home whitening alone.
The whitening effect is not permanent and usually requires top-ups once a year. The treatment does not whiten existing fillings and crowns.
